July 5,6 and 7   Deer River Wild Rice Festival - Deer River, MN
For more than 60 years the Deer River area has celebrated the World's Largest Wild Rice Festival. Originally, the festival was established to bring the community together to celebrate the abundance of one of the area's natural staples, wild rice. Though wild rice still grows abundantly in some of the area lakes and rivers, the advent of "paddy rice" which is grown commercially and harvested mechanically, has made the once regional product a national available commodity.

Like the rice itself, the Wild Rice Festival has evolved as well. Today's wild rice festivals sponsored by the Deer River Lions Club feature a full schedule of activities designed to bring the whole Deer River Area Community together for a weekend of fun, food, entertainment, and fellowship. Whether you are young or old, there is always something to see and do at the festival.

The 2013 Wild Rice Festival will be held July 5th, 6th, and 7th. To see what we have in store for you this year, click on the Schedule tab above. The schedule will change regularly between now and July, so be sure to check it often. We are sure that this years World's Largest Wild Rice Festival will be the best one yet.

November 30th, 2012 - 9am to approx. 11:30 am   Upper Mississippi Flood Task Force - TBD - Grand Rapids, MN
Due to the severe storms and flooding in early spring of 2012, a Task force is beginning to take shape to address on-going issues on how to facilitate clean-up/restoration activities and to help identify the process and channels necessary to expedite action. This initial meeting will bring together a group of key stakeholders that can offer suggestions for the developmental stages of this Task force by opening dialog on: Why is the meeting necessary? What is the History and effects of flood damage? What options are currently in place for assistance and are there other avenues? What is the States role? Who will lead the drive going forward?

The optimum outcome from this meeting will be a clear understanding of the work to be done and who will comprise the nucleus of this Task force. A key component of this newly formed group will be to act as a central contact for surrounding communities (Lake Itasca to Little Falls) affected by severe weather events within the Upper Mississippi Headwaters region.

The meeting will run from 9 am to approximately 11:30 am. A location has yet to be determined but it is anticipated that it will be in Grand Rapids, MN.

March 30th, 2012 - starting 10 am   MHB STRATEGIC PLANNING SESSION III - Northern Lights Casino Event Center, Walker, MN
We are excited to let everyone know we have recently received a 3 yr. BWSR Clean Water Fund grant for a project titled: 'Prioritizing Conservation Project Implementation in the 400-mile Mississippi Headwaters'. We are holding a Strategic Planning Session to get all 8 headwater counties together to cover the details. The meeting will be Friday, March 30th (10 am to 1 pm) in Walker, MN at the Northern Lights Casino - Leech Lake Room. An Agenda for the day is attached.

The BWSR Grant project will develop a prioritization methodology that utilizes a GIS land analysis along with existing water quality data sets in order to determine river water quality trends. Once this data is gathered and prioritized with recommended mitigation strategies, it will be given to the 8 county water plan administrators such that a specific river chapter amendment can be developed in each individual county water plan. These recommendations would be specific strategies, often crossing county boundaries for implementation. Examples might include development of private forest stewardship plans, identifying key areas and incentives for best management practices, amending specific land-use controls or zoning districts, surveys of onsite septic systems, feed lot assessments, sensitive area protection strategies and more, but targeted toward the areas of highest priority.
